News from Shalstone

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY  - A very significant number in our village joined us for our Remembrance Sunday Service. Anthony Shillington had given an enormous amount of thought and preparation to provide a moving and empathetic occasion.

Louise Adkins, the relative of three names on our Roll of Honour, was again able to join us and we were also fortunate to again welcome Neel Collin from Stowe (and Tingewick) to play the Last Post and Reveille on his cornet.

In his address Anthony focused on the village as it was at the time of the First World War when the population was double its present number and the ‘concern, pride, hope and anxiety that must have run through all the villagers, and especially the families of those young soldiers, some of them very young,’ when they left for war. Those never to return represented a very significant percentage of our small community.

Anthony then read out the names of the relatives of villagers currently living in Shalstone who sacrificed their lives in either the First or Second World Wars. He would appreciate knowing of any additional family members who could be included.

Thank you, Anthony, for a very thought-provoking and meaningful service.
